Mobility is one of the key aspects of the MEME programme. All students will study at two or more partner universities, according to their choice. Students start their studies with a semester in either Groningen or Uppsala, and will then move to either Montpellier or Munich for their second semester. In their second year, students can choose the partner university to conduct their individual research/thesis projects. In the 4th semester, a number of students will also be able to do a 6 month research project at Harvard University in the USA or at University of Lausanne in Switzerland.
However, there are also limitations to mobility. For example, some partner universities only issue a Master’s degree to students having spent at least two semesters at this university (see double degrees). Partner country students with an EMJMD scholarship are not allowed to study more than three months outside the EU (e.g. at Harvard) without losing part of their scholarship. Similarly, Programme country students with an EMJMD scholarship are not allowed to spend (study/research/placement/thesis preparation) time in their country of residence without losing part of their scholarship (see scholarships).
